Traditional Climbing 1: Gear Placements and Anchoring

A limited offering at one of the best trad climbing areas in the southwest: Cochise Stronghold!

Traditional Climbing 1 is the first of three courses desiged to expand technical climbing knowledge from sport climbing ino the realm of "trad" climbing. This course is designed with ground-based practice allowing participants to:

  • explore the gear used in traditional climbing
  •  understand the intended purposes and limitations of the gear
  • progress to making gear placements
  • practice anchor building

This full-day course ends with participants toprope climbing to see how gear is used in single-pitch terrain. Participants are responsiable for their own transportation as well as food and drink for this full-day course. Prerequisite sport climbing experience is required.

Learn to lead and descend single-pitch trad climbs, including more advanced anchoring, top belays, mock leads, and more station management
skills.

  • Trad climbing 1 course or equivalent experience with a working knowledge of traditional gear placement, anchoring, and sport climbing lead experience are required.

Learn multipitch climbing techniques, including station management, descents, transitions, and practice on a multipitch climb with a top belay.

  • Trad climbing 1 & 2 or equivalent experience. Participants must have led or followed single-pitch traditional and sport climbs and possess a solid understanding of traditional gear placement, anchoring, and rappelling.

Self-Rescue: Indoor Single PitchSelf-Rescue: Indoor Single Pitch

Join us for this indoor class on what to do when things go "off-script."

Learn:

  • Pick offs
  • Ascending and counter balanced ascending
  • Belay takeover
Self Rescue for Multipitch ClimbingSelf Rescue for Multipitch Climbing

In this 8-hour class, you will learn fundamental skills that are essential for efficient self-rescue on multipitch terrain. Participants should have some multipitch climbing experience. Class size limited to 6 participants. Location: Mount Lemmon.

Prerequisites:
You should have some multipitch climbing experience going into the class. Those newer to multipitch climbing should have at least five multipitch climbs and familiarity with the knots and basic terms used in this kind of terrain.

Our guides will provide transportation, all of the necessary climbing equipment, and set up for the day. No experience required.
